ATLANTA, GA - Xelerated Packet Devices, leading the development for early deployment of 40 Gbps (OC-768) solutions for high-speed Edge and Core network equipment, today announced its XeleratorTM family of programmable Network Processors at SUPERCOMM 2001.
"Our product offering provides unique opportunities for both system vendors and ISPs," says Johan Börje, CEO of Xelerated Packet Devices. "With the outstanding scalability of our architecture and the resulting ability to use the same network processor for a multitude of system solutions, our customers can reap significant cost and time-to-market advantages. Yet our customers will maintain the ability to differentiate themselves on the market thanks to the extensive programmability capabilities of the network processors."
Mr Börje continues: "Xelerated's product offering will take networking and revenue opportunities for ISPs to the next level. Our network processors facilitate more advanced traffic handling such as MPLS, QoS, and statistics collection for billing and SLA management at entirely new network speeds. For the ISP this means new revenue streams."
Xelerated's breakthrough architecture represents a quantum leap in terms of network processor design, which in an entirely new way allows a combination of performance and programmability. The architecture is based on a fully programmable pipeline of exceptional width and length, scaling to 160 Gbps. The wire-speed performance is inherent in the architecture. XeleratorTM Network Processors also offer unique flexibility with regard to line-card design. The individual ports on each chip can be combined in a wide range of ways depending on the customer's needs in terms of functionality and speeds between 10 and 40 Gbps.
"The 40 Gbps market is emerging right now. Programmable solutions that can handle both 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps will be very attractive for system vendors. Combining programmability and performance is essential to allow network processors to enter the Service Provider Edge and Core segments. In combination with architectural scalability and development tools, this will keep system costs down over different product generations. These are the essential keys to success in this market," says Michael Pietrobono, Director of Research at Sterling Research.
Xelerated announced the following Product Portfolio offering:
Programmable Network Processors
XeleratorTM X40 Packet Processor (10-40 Gbps with 8xSPI-4 Phase 2 ports)
XeleratorTM T40 Traffic Manager (10-40 Gbps with 8xSPI-4 Phase 2 ports) Software
XeleratorTM Control Plane SW
XeleratorTM Forwarding Plane Applications
XeleratorTM Development Tools
XeleratorTM Engineering Services
Xelerated will bring the above product portfolio to the market in accordance with the following roadmap:
XeleratorTM Development Tools: December 2001
XeleratorTM Forwarding Plane Applications: December 2001
XeleratorTM Engineering Services: December 2001
XeleratorTM Control Plane SW: March 2002
XeleratorTM X40 Packet Processor: April 2002
XeleratorTM T40 Traffic Manager: Q3-2002"
Highly integrated, scalable solutions are what the market wants today. The capability to also deliver a full offering of chips, control plane SW, forwarding plane SW, development tools and engineering services will provide a clear edge on the market. But even that is not enough. Highly successful network processor vendors must furthermore have a full understanding of how their customers build their systems and how their customers' customers run their networks," says Linley Gwennap, Principal Analyst of The Linley Group.
"Since August of last year Xelerated has successfully attracted a number of the best professionals in the network industry with experience and a proven track record from the networking industry. The members of this multifaceted team have previously worked in companies representing all aspects of networking solutions, ranging from backend chip design to embedded SW design and ISPs," says Viesturs Vucins, Chairman of the Board at Xelerated Packet Devices AB and former President of Lucent Enterprise Networks EMEA.
