Xelerated Unveils 10 Gbps Network Processor Offering

May 3, 2002 - Xelerated today unveiled its 10 Gbps network processor offering, featuring three devices - the X10, the X10d and the X10q - with one, two and four 10 Gbps ports respectively. It is the industry's first offering with multiple 10 Gbps ports in a single chip.

"Xelerated offers a high-capacity network processor solution that meets the rigorous demands of established system vendors by combining the much-wanted programmability with guaranteed wire-speed performance. Based on discussions with customers, we have seen that traditional approaches, such as RISC and configurable state machine solutions, are not viable for high?end systems," said Johan Börje, CEO, Xelerated. Mr Börje continues: "Our offering is the only one simultaneously handling all the required functionality, such as ACLs, policing, statistics, multicast and load balancing, at wire speed. We already have Tier 1 customers signed up for the first samples, which will be delivered this summer."

Thanks to the port density, the XeleratorTM NPUs have the best form factor for 10 Gbps solutions, resulting in the lowest power consumption, smallest footprint and lowest chip count on the market. With the XeleratorTM offering, a complete family of switch/router line cards can be built, providing solutions for line rates ranging from STS 1 to 10 Gbps, Dual 10 Gbps and Quad 10 Gbps. As part of Xelerated's solutions offering, interoperability has already been validated with best-in-class products from leading component vendors such as IDT, PMC-Sierra, NetLogic and Infineon.

"Using its novel architecture, Xelerated is about to launch the highest-performance network processors in the industry, capable of handling traffic at speeds from 1 Gbps to 10 Gbps and beyond," said Linley Gwennap, principal analyst of The Linley Group. "With the best port density on the market, these chips will be cost-effective in supporting feature-rich packet processing in systems such as metro, edge and core routers and switches," he continued.

The advantages of Xelerated's offering stem from its breakthrough architecture, the PISCTM, which scales far beyond the 100 million packets per second already obtainable today. "The performance of the XeleratorTM NPUs is always wire-speed, and the NPUs can sustain overspeed operations to accommodate bandwidth expansion even at packet sizes down to 40 bytes. The need for surrounding circuitry is minimized through the extensive on-chip functionality and powerful interfaces for glue less off-chip access. Together with the ability to handle both ingress and egress traffic flows this saves valuable board space and minimizes power consumption," said Joachim Roos, VP Engineering, Xelerated.

Xelerated*s product offering also includes the XeleratorTM Development Tools, launched and shipped to customers in January this year. The tool kit is delivered with an extensive package of forwarding plane applications example code, such as MPLS, IPv6 and IPv4.
