SAN JOSE, CA, October 22, 2003 - Xelerated, developer of the first single-chip, 40Gbps network processor, and Teradiant, developer of the first single-chip, 40Gbps traffic manager, today announced availability of a joint solution targeting high-performance, high functionality, cost optimized metro Ethernet systems. By combining Xelerated's X10q network processor and Teradiant's TeraPacket traffic manager, the solution enables networking OEMs to rapidly architect and build an entire family of high-density, high-functionality metro Ethernet systems ranging from standalone "pizza box" systems to chassis-based systems. Xelerated and Teradiant will provide a joint demonstration of the solution based on their development platforms at Network Processors Conference West, October 21-23, in San Jose, CA.
Targeting a range of advanced applications such as VPLS, MPLS, Martini Draft, IPv6, IPv4, and Diffserv for metro core, metro edge and metro access, the solution demonstrates the ability to provide deterministic 40Gbps performance and advanced queuing for all packet sizes. For example, the network processor, traffic manager switch and associated memory devices consume only 14.6W per 10Gbps in 40Gbps configurations. The chips' high levels of integration enable system vendors to achieve full-duplex bandwidth at less than $500 per 10Gbps for these components.
"By combining the industry's highest-performance network processor and traffic manager, Xelerated and Teradiant have set a new cost-for-performance standard at less than $500 per 10Gbps, including memories," said John Metz, president of Metz International (Harvard, Mass.), a consulting firm specializing in network processing. "This potent combination provides networking system OEMs with tools to create leading-edge designs that slash both development time and cost."
The X10q is the only available programmable NPU capable of 20Gbps full-duplex performance at all packet sizes in a single chip, and TeraPacket is the only available traffic manager capable of 20Gbps full-duplex traffic management and 40Gbps switching on a single chip. TeraPacket's and the X10q's integration of high bandwidth and an extensive feature set at a low cost-per-Gbps enables network equipment OEMs to incorporate high-end chip solutions affordably in metro Ethernet networks. Both products offer a combination of flexibility and performance that sets a new standard for this market.
"OEMs using the X10q and a TeraPacket traffic manager benefit from the industry's most highly integrated 40Gbps packet processing and traffic management solution," said Subhash Bal, Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Teradiant. "Our joint solution and proven interoperability becomes a powerful development tool for building high-functionality, low-cost systems ranging from pizza boxes to chassis-based systems. OEMs further benefit from the platform's line-rate guarantees, robust feature set, and tested and proven interoperability. And their customers benefit from advanced traffic-management features such as per-VLL (virtual leased line) bandwidth guarantees."
"We are pleased to demonstrate interoperability with Teradiant's traffic managers," said Thomas Eklund, VP of Business Development at Xelerated. "This industry-first 40Gbps network-processing platform enables system vendors to build highly integrated systems meeting emerging metro standards such as Martini Draft and VPLS. Our forwarding plane application for VPLS, MPLS, Martini Draft, IPv6, IPv4, and Diffserv also gives system vendors a pre-tested software solution to further reduce development time."
The Xelerated-Teradiant solution takes advantage of the open architecture of the companies' devices. Communications between the NPU and traffic manager and with other system components occur over standard interfaces such as NPSI and SPI-4.2, simplifying system design. This open-standards approach enables network equipment OEMs to build systems using the best devices for the target application, rather than having to deal with single-vendor, proprietary solutions.
Demos of the Xelerated-Teradiant solution, handling a mix of networking protocols at line rate, are available at NPC West, booth 215, in San Jose, October 21-23. The Network Processor Conference is the leading event focusing on network processors and co-processors (such as security chips, CAMs, and traffic managers).
Pricing and Availability
Both companies' chips are available now. TeraPacket is available in versions optimized for Ethernet, and in versions optimized for SONET/SDH. Prices range from $495 to $1,095 in quantities of 10,000. The XeleratorTM X10q family of network processors consists of three products: X10q-e, X10q-m and X10q-w, and prices range from $490 to $1,300 in quantities of 10,000.
About Teradiant
Teradiant Networks develops and markets semiconductors that enable networking system manufacturers to build scalable switch and router platforms for next-generation networks. Its 8000 Series and 9000 Series families are the first traffic manager devices to be available in single-chip solutions for 10Gbps-40Gbps performance. Teradiant semiconductors are optimized for a range of applications in core, edge, metro and enterprise networks - both for SONET/SDH and Ethernet. About Xelerated
Xelerated is recognized as the only network processor vendor having combined the efficiency of an ASIC with the programmability of traditional network processors. This extraordinary efficiency translates into the most cost effective solution with the highest functionality per port and lowest power consumption on the market. The company sampled its first generation of network processors in February 2003. The XeleratorTM X10q family of network processors consists of three products: the X10q-e, optimized for enterprise Ethernet and OC48 solutions; the X10q-m for advanced metro Ethernet applications; and the X10q-w for the high-end Sonet/SDH products. All products are equipped with 4 SPI4.2 ports. Xelerated has offices in Burlington, San Jose and Stockholm. Additional information is available at www.xelerated.com
